I know — what was I thinking? For a moment a chill ran down my spine as I thought: I've just ordered a lumpy veggie car crash in a non-veggie restaurant. Am I mad?
The 10 Best Scottish Restaurants In Glasgow
Apparently not. So fabulous was the crumble — buttery, cheesy, savoury and nutty, the squash and swede packed with garlicky, rosemary flavours — that I can fast-forward right now and tell you I will leave later tonight with the recipe scribbled down on a piece of paper. Bobby's slow-roasted neck of lamb was tender, slightly sticky, the butter beans pleasant but lacking the powerful sauce the dish needed.
And that pithivier? Straight up? Those 10 minutes were filled with a discussion of what the hell a pithivier is.
The last I had was years ago in Hotel du Vin when it was in its pomp and glory. A pithivier is a tart, sometimes made with puff pastry, but tonight it's made with shortcrust, crisp, buttery, straight out of the oven, bursting open under the spoon to reveal a sweet, sharp dark chocolate and hazelnut filling, a dollop of not-too-rich — although slightly iced — caramel ice-cream atop. It's an outstandingly simple yet superb dessert — rich, substantial and, though the filling is thick and gooey, as it should be to keep the pastry dry, it doesn't overpower or stray into Ferrero Rocher territory.
It's bloody good. And so, to my slight surprise, is the Wee Lochan. I had had this billed in my head as just a good neighbourhood restaurant.
Restaurant review: Wee Lochan serves up a work of art
It's more than that. If they could only get their heads around hammering the sourcing a bit harder and playing with very local ingredients, it would be one of Glasgow's best.
MENU Scottish and modern but not entirely safe and predictable. However, they could — and should — be bolder. FOOD There are some superb dishes. The spiced split-pea soup was delicious, the pithivier outstanding and the swede and squash crumble excellent. We would return. Hi Mr Baxendale Aisla here, Glad you had a good meal on Saturday - always nice to know that all was well.
I just wanted to clear up a wee point.
My husband was indeed off on Saturday night someone has to keep the kids in order in our house but our head chef, Bob, was in charge of the team not our second chef. I thought I might add that to reassure you that on a busy Saturday we do have our top team on even if Rupert isn't there And, yes, we do our best to stagger the bookings so that everything stays calm and well timed - sometimes it goes wrong and all the seven o'clock bookings are late and all the half past seven tables are early with everyone arriving with the 7.
When this happens it can be a bit hectic so we try hard very very hard to avoid this Hope we see you soon.. Kind regards, Aisla. We go often to Wee Lochan.

Tonight we had a lovely meal for a family birthday. The staff are very efficient and good fun. The twice baked parsnip soufflee was amazing! I would recommend it- its very good value and you get lovely tablet with your bill! I wish this place was in Perth. I am annoying my friends demanding to come here every time I visit Glasgow. The staff are so friendly. The food fabby and although it a short menu it is very varied. I had the Cullen skink then the scallops saving room for pudding then the plum and almond tart. I will be back! This is the second time we have been here and it is fab, meals are delicious, and desserts are to die for, staff are really nice and helpful and the quality of food is excellent i would highly recommend going we will definetly be going back, better booking at weekend as is always busy.
Cant praise it enough go and try you wont be dissapionted. A friend and I had lunch there last week and we thought it was very good value. Very good fish and interesting twists on old favourites. The treacle basted smoked salmon was excellent as was the smoked haddock. My friend goes there regularly but it was my first time I will be back. Own or manage this property?
